More than two years have passed since the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes from circulation, but people still have a large number of these notes. According to the latest data released by the RBI, as of July 31, 2025, a total of Rs 6017 crore worth of Rs 2000 notes are still in circulation.
RBI latest report – 98.31% notes returned, 1.69% still in the market
The Reserve Bank said that when the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes was announced on May 19, 2023, their total value was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. Since then, 98.31 percent of the notes have been returned, while 1.69 percent i.e. about 3 crore notes are still in the market.
2000 notes are still legal tender
RBI has clarified that 2000 rupee notes are still legal tender. That means they can be accepted in transactions. However, the process of gradually removing them from circulation is going on.
The process of exchanging and depositing notes is going on in these offices
2000 rupee notes can still be exchanged and deposited in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank. Apart from this, people can also send notes to RBI offices through post offices across the country and deposit them in their bank accounts.
These are the 19 issue offices of RBI
Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
The remaining notes are under suspicion
Experts believe that the notes worth more than Rs 6000 crore still in circulation have either not been deposited by the general public or some of this money may be linked to illegal or unknown sources.
